About Me

My name is Susanne Powell. I was lucky enough to have been born in Wales, which is a wonderful country. Although I have done my fair share of travelling, and seen some fantastic places, there is no place like home - and I love it!

I live in a fair sized town in the Welsh Valleys, which has a fascinating and proud history. I share my home with my daughter Mia and a rabbit who has a variety of names, including Beast, The Animal and The Boy... His real name is Alfalfa.

Having left school at 18 and deciding NOT to go on to university, I took up a job in the Civil Service as a temporary measure until I made up my mind what I wanted to do with my life. I stayed there for 20 years! Admittedly I held a number of posts in a number of different Government Departments, eventually ending up at the National Assembly for Wales. During this time I put myself through university and gained my BA Hons with a specialism in languages (French). Finally, I felt that the time was right to follow up my ambitions to teach, and took a Post Graduate Certificate of Education, qualifying me to teach children between the ages of 5 and 11. I have been teaching since 2006 years and thoroughly enjoy what I do.

I currently work for the Local Authority. I am the only Primary EAL (English as an Additional Language) Teacher in the County Borough, which I guess makes me kind of unique! My job involves assessing new arrivals, determining the level of support they need, setting achievable targets that ensure progression along our "5 Stage Model" of language progress for EAL pupils, and teaching targeted sessions, either on a 1:1 basis or in larger groups. At the moment I teach over 100 children per week across 12 schools! Sure keeps me on my toes.

In my spare (say what?) time, I enjoy running and walking. My passion is baking, mostly cup cakes and muffins. I find it very therapeutic, but never eat my own bakes. I always end up giving them away! I love reading when I have time, mostly Victorian classics and the occasional chick lit if I want a mindless, easy read. I also can't pass the children's book shelves, and have built up quite a collection - much to the chagrin of my daughter.. Take a look at my Shelfari page for some of my favourites.

I hope you will find something to spark your interest in my pages and that you will want to come back and visit often. Please drop me a line - I'd love to hear from you.
